MoMA Exclusive: This skateboard triptych features a reproduction of 727 (1996), a three-paneled painting by Takashi Murakami that is in MoMA’s collection. Takashi Murakami who was born in Tokyo in 1962, is a world-renowned artist known for blurring the line between fine art and pop culture. His artwork is greatly influenced by manga—Japanese comic books and graphic novels—and animations. His work has been featured in several MoMA exhibitions, including Comic Abstraction: Image-Breaking, Image-Making from 2007.
Murakami’s 727 features Mr. DOB, a character created in 1993 who was among the first in a pantheon of characters inspired by the culture of anime and manga that emerged in Japan’s postwar era. The three skateboards are made of 7-ply American maple wood and hanging hardware is included. Each deck measures 31h x 8w x 0.5"d.
